The driver of a pickup truck that collided with a church minibus in rural Texas, killing 13 people on Wednesday acknowledged he had been texting while driving -...- highlighting the dangers of sending messages on smartphones while behind the wheel. U.S. highway deaths spiked to 35,092 last year in the highest one-year increase since 1966, and 10 percent of all traffic fatalities involved a distracted driver, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported. Crashes increase by four times when a driver uses a cell phone -- with no real difference between hand-held and hands-free phones. Despite this, only 14 states and the District of Columbia ban driving with handheld mobile phones, and no jurisdictions bans hands-free devices. The U.S. government called on smartphone makers to voluntarily add features that block functions linked to distracted driving, such as certain video displays and manual text entry while vehicles are under way. Manufacturers could easily meet these guidelines by creating a driver mode. These restrictions, however, were met with extreme opposition from the industry. What should you do? First, don’t use smartphones in your car. Put your phone in the trunk, your pocketbook, or the glove box. That phone call and that text can wait. Second, write to your state senator and congressman or congresswoman asking that they fight for the NTSB’s guidelines to be made into law. Cell phone related accidents are epidemic. Put down the cell phone, and tell others to do the same. Be safe. www.mirmanlawyers.com #distracteddrivers #highwaysafety #smartphones #texascrash #textingwhiledriving
