Insurer Denies Alligator Damage Claim

For you Floridians.... A quick post regarding Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage. This is commonly referred to as (UM/UIM) on your policies. YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS ON YOUR POLICY!... Did you know that here in Florida the law DOES NOT require a driver carry Bodily Injury Coverage for the damages they cause to others? Seems crazy, right? But its true. We became a "no-fault" state back in 1972. That means you, as the owner of a registered vehicle are required to carry $10,000 in PIP medical benefits to cover for your own injuries (and that of a resident relative) regardless of fault. Unfortunately, medical expenses have only increased since 1972. Therefore, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage is a MUST. All too often seriously injured clients come to us only to find out that the at-fault party did not carry Bodily Injury Liability Coverage, or carried a minimal amount of coverage which was insufficient to adequately compensate the seriously injured clients for the injuries sustained. This often leaves someone who is injured at no fault of his/her own overwhelmed with outstanding medical bills and often having no viable recourse for compensation for future pain and suffering, lost wages, etc... Among other things, your health insurance will NOT cover pain & suffering, lost wages, disability, long term nursing care and death resulting from a car accident. But Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage WILL. We all need to save money where we can and the insurance agents will try to offer you the lowest quote. That's a good thing, to a point. I have found that regardless of what was signed when purchasing our auto policies, too often many of us did not fully understand the risks associated with foregoing Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage. And if you are thinking, "it wont happen to me".... . driving in Florida, there is a fair chance that it will. It is a relatively inexpensive addition to your auto policy and you will be glad you have it when it matters most.
